WHAT FIRST OF ALL DOES FLYING SIGNIFY FOR THE SOUL OF MAN?
Surely, in the first place: ascent, endeavour, aspiration.
Secondly: escape, release, freedom, the longing for pure, untrammelled, unobstructed movement, the longing to shake off the fetters of this earth. 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away and be at rest...',
Now these two impulses — aspiration and escape — were the two main springs of life and art.
As a kid, in the schools' gym, I used to look at myself in the big mirrors, thinking, while performing, could I fly???
